I’m a huge fan of Wes Anderson. Innumerable are the instances his name and screenshots of his films find themselves on my moodboards. To work with him is a dream of mine. To get an insight into his creative genius, even more so.

Which is why, watching his original storyboard for contemporary classic ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ leap to life as an animated short is extremely special.

Self-narrated and hand-drawn by Anderson himself, this Blu-ray extra for The Criterion Collection is a 25 minute showcase of glorious animatics. Showcasing his initial vision and concepts for the Oscar-winning film, the result is a beautiful, black-and-white animation that still holds the quintessential Andersonian whimsy and spirit.

Watching it, one can’t help but wonder… ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ would be glorious reincarnated as a full, animated feature.
