It’s not Christmas yet without Albania gifting us it’s national selects for the Eurovision Song Contest.
And this year’s line up for the 58th edition of the Festivali i Këngës offer some true floorfillers and stocking stuffers.
Perhaps the biggest name in the line up is pop songstress Elvana Gjata. And her song ‘Me Tana’ (‘With All’) is the serve we’ve been waiting for since Eleni Foureira’s ‘Fuego’.
Listen below:
Straight from the majestic balkan-esque opening, there is no doubt which country is performing. It’s quintessentially Albanian and hooks you in with all the headiness and spice we’ve come to expect. It then gives way to a musical intro that is contemporary, unexpected and clearly designed for television, teeing up for some dramatic cold cuts & closeups.
As the song kicks into gear, I’m instantly vibing with the catchy hook and deceptively loose production: purposeful, I imagine, to give Elvana enough room to showcase her vocal prowess.
By the time the song ends, both the instrumental breakdown and sultry “ngadale ndale”s are stuck in my brain. That catchiness, combined with Elvana’s obviously telly-ready package, is definitely Albania’s best choice for Rotterdam in 2020.
Here’s hoping Eleni (slated as a guest performer for FiK) will rub off some of those Euro-vibes onto Elvana.
